What factors influence the price of tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium sulfate?Time:2025-10-18

Tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium sulfate is a non-oxidizing fungicide used primarily in oilfield production and aquaculture. Data analysis over the past decade shows significant price fluctuations, significantly impacting the production costs of fungicide manufacturers. So, what factors influence the price of tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium sulfate?

    1. Oil prices.

However, when oil prices are relatively high, oilfield producers enjoy lucrative profits. Foreign oilfield producers are less concerned about the cost of oilfield additives, especially fungicides. However, when international oil prices fall below $60 per barrel, demand for fungicides becomes more conservative due to the downturn in shale oil and Middle Eastern submarine oil production, leading to a decline in market demand.

    2. Prices of Glutaraldehyde and 127 Fungicides

In oilfield production, glutaraldehyde and 127 have similar bactericidal effects to THPS, although they have some differences. However, when the price of glutaraldehyde and other fungicides is significantly lower than that of THPS, glutaraldehyde may be used for sterilization. When the price of glutaraldehyde is close to that of tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate, THPS is more environmentally friendly and therefore more likely to be used as a fungicide. These two different scenarios can lead to significant fluctuations in the price of THPS.

    3. Yellow Phosphorus Price and Sodium Hypophosphite Production

Sodium hypophosphite produces pH3 during production. Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate is produced by the reaction of pH3 with sulfuric acid. A significant increase in sodium hypophosphite production would result in a large supply of pH3, which in turn would significantly increase the supply of THPS. However, when market demand is weak and there is an imbalance between supply and demand, this increased supply can cause a decline in the market price of THPS. Furthermore, a significant increase in yellow phosphorus prices would directly drive up the prices of related phosphorus chemical products, including THPS.

The three factors mentioned above primarily influence the price of tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate, but whether these factors necessarily exhibit a linear positive correlation is difficult to determine. This depends on a comprehensive consideration of factors such as market supply and demand, the industry's economic environment, and phosphorus chemical industry policies.
